Successful Tests of European Experimental Space Vehicle by STARCS

STARCS has during Q2 2010 performed wind tunnel tests of the Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle (IXV) which is the European Space Agency (ESA) re-entry system and technologies demonstrator. The IXV is paving the way to European autonomous space transportation and exploration endeavors.

STARCS assignment was to provide complementary aerodynamic characterization of the IXV vehicle with emphasis on the Descent & Recovery System initialization phase. The wind tunnel tests were performed at speeds ranging from Mach 0.3 to Mach 1.7 and included a number of tests of aerodynamic forces, moments and local static pressures among other things.

– This has been a very important commission for us since the IXV is part of ESA’s Future Launchers Preparatory Programme.” says Mikael Tjernlund CEO at STARCS.

STARCS performed the project as a subcontractor to Dassault Aviation and the work was funded by ESA. Dassault is very satisfied with the tests and the project manager at Dassault, Jean-Pierre TRIBOT, commented after the test was completed “STARCS performed the highly sophisticated tests with proficiency and flexibility”.

Volvo Aero’s high-performance, low-pressure compressor passed testing

The successful testing of Volvo Aero’s compressor technology in EU's VITAL environmental project marks a milestone in making commercial aircraft engines lighter and more fuel efficient.

The testing performed in partnership with FOI at STARCS in Stockholm was a big success, showing that future low pressure compressors can be made much lighter and shorter with the same or better performance, says Torbjörn Salomonson, project manager at Volvo Aero.

VITAL – an acronym for Environmentally Friendly Aero Engine – is a EUR 90 million programme which aims to deliver the technological breakthroughs that will help Europe meet its ambitious environmental goals for 2020. The European goals are 50 per cent lower carbon dioxide emissions, 80 per cent lower nitrogen dioxide emissions and a 50 per cent reduction in noise. VITAL results will provide key stepping stone towards reaching these goals

Volvo Aero has invested heavily in the programme and is playing a leading role.
One of Volvo Aero’s contributions to VITAL is a high-speed, low-pressure compressor (LPC). The LPC is used as an intermediate compressor and contributes significantly to the total engine weight. Reducing the number of stages not only makes the LPC shorter but also makes other engine parts shorter giving a spin off effect for total engine weight and CO2 reduction.

The low-pressure compressor (LPC) was designed to be 15% lighter than current LPC:s with state of the art efficiency. By increasing the performance of each stage in the LPC the total number of stages was reduced thus saving weight and length. The testing was made to demonstrate that the performance targets were met.

The testing was performed at STARCS (Sjöland & Thyselius Aerodynamic Research Centre AB) compressor research facility in Stockholm in collaboration with Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). The heavily instrumented test compressor was driven by a 4.5 MW electric motor and continuously monitored throughout the test.

The testing has included test procedures for mechanical and aerodynamic behaviour of the test compressor and we are very pleased with the result, says Salomonson, the experienced and competent personnel at STARCS and FOI enabled the demanding and highly complex test plan to be carried through smoothly.

The test compressor performed as predicted in pre-test simulations.

We still have a large amount of test data to analyse, but from what we know so far we regard this as a success, says Salomonson.

Facts on VITAL
VITAL is a collaborative research project, which will run for four years and aims to reduce aircraft engine noise and CO2 emissions significantly. It has a total budget of EUR 91 million, including EUR 51 million in funding from the European Commission. Snecma is leading a consortium of 53 partners including all the major European engine manufacturers, Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, Avio, Volvo Aero Corporation, Techspace Aero, Rolls-Royce Deutschland and ITP, plus Airbus.

Site of Knowledge invests in automatic code generation

The Sjöland & Thyselius Group continues to grow by becoming the majority owner of the IT-company Sellegi. It is Sjöland & Thyselius’ subsidiary Site of Knowledge that acquires the majority of the shares in Sellegi.

Sellegi is a company with expert knowledge in the areas formal languages, compiling techniques and automatic code generation. Sellegi will strengthen Site of Knowledge relationship with their mutual customers Ericsson and SonyEricsson.

Site of Knowledge is an IT-consultancy business with senior competence in management, project management and technical studies. The expert consultants of Site of Knowledge all have profound knowledge and unique competence and many years’ experience within the IT and telecom area. The acquisition of Sellegi is consistent with this strategy of offering customers expert knowledge and it will add experience of development of advanced technology.

− The acquisition of Sellegi gives Site of Knowledge further strength when it comes to project management as well as expert technological knowledge, says Magnus Hedberg, managing director of Site of Knowledge. This strengthens our position as an important partner to our customers.

− Code generation is an expansive area and our future expansion will be easier as a part of Sjöland & Thyselius, says Lennart Mandahl, founder of Sellegi.

Sjöland &Thyselius Group is in the middle of a phase of expansion with several acquisitions on the agenda, the acquisition of Sellegi being the latest one. In May Sjöland & Thyselius took over the operations of FOI´s (The Swedish Defense Research Establishment) wind tunnel operations and now the company strengthens its position in south of Sweden with consultants holding a expert knowledge in the area of automatic code generation. The Group is already leading in simulation techniques and 3D-simulation, areas requiring a very high technical knowledge. To this the acquisition of Sellegi adds a strong position in the areas of formal languages, compiling techniques and automatic code generation.

Sjöland & Thyselius breathe life into FOI’s wind tunnels

Sjöland & Thyselius are to take over FOI’s wind tunnel operations and look forward to international expansion and the development of energy-efficient engines.

“In our evaluation of these facilities, we have found both the equipment and the technical competence of the personnel to be of extremely high quality,” says Rune Thyselius, a partner in Sjöland & Thyselius. “We can also see new business possibilities abroad, especially in the development of energy-efficient engines.”

All involved parties are very pleased with the agreement. On the picture from the left is Madelene Sandström, Managing Director of FOI, Rune Thyselius, Magnus Sjöland and Nils Olsson, Assistant Head of Division at FOI.

“Our technically advanced solutions for the defence sector and in aviation have much in common with the work done at the facilities in Bromma. This acquisition therefore offers good opportunities for synergy effects,” continues Rune Thyselius. “We expect the business to be in financial balance in just a few years.”

The acquisition includes all the facilities, including the recently completed compressor test rig for the testing of aircraft engines. The transfer also means a continuing guarantee of employment for the personnel concerned.

“This is a very good solution for the wind tunnel facilities, both now and in the longer term,” says Nils Olsson, assistant Head of Division at FOI and the person who has been leading the work behind the sale. “With Sjöland & Thyselius as purchasers, we keep the leading edge expertise in Sweden and hasten the move towards more civil sector business already initiated within FOI.”

Background

FOI decided in August 2007 to dispose of its business in Bromma by 31 December 2008 at the latest, since the Armed Forces’ funding of this activity has largely ceased. During the autumn, the process of selling on the international market has been under way. On 26 May a transfer agreement was signed between FOI and Sjöland & Thyselius Aerodynamic Research CenterAB (STARCS). The transfer takes place on 1 July 2008. The facilities in Bromma have been in existence since the 1940s and have been used primarily to meet the needs of the Armed Forces and the Swedish defence industry.
